Brown Marmorated Stink Bug season: how to prepare imported cargo

Each year, one small insect causes an outsized amount of disruption for Australian importers. The Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (BMSB) is a seasonal biosecurity threat that can delay, redirect or add significant cost to imported cargo — and the businesses that plan for it are the ones that avoid the headaches.

Why the stink bug is such a concern

BMSB is a hitchhiker pest. It doesn't damage cargo directly on the voyage — instead it shelters inside vehicles, machinery, furniture, appliances and packaging, then emerges in a new environment where it has no natural predators. Established populations threaten horticulture and agriculture, which is exactly why Australia takes it so seriously.

The risk season and what it covers

Measures apply to targeted high-risk goods manufactured in or shipped from nominated risk countries, for cargo that arrives during the risk window that runs from 1 September to 30 April. During this period, affected goods must be treated by an approved provider, either offshore before departure or on arrival in Australia.

• Know your exposure early — check whether your goods and origin country fall under the targeted measures before you ship.
• Treat offshore where possible — treatment before departure is often faster and avoids on-arrival bottlenecks.
